Style Compass: Bruce Bierman in 1stdibs’ Introspective Magazine

1stdibs introspective magazine

I’m delighted to be the subject of a profile by Jorge Arango in the “Style Compass” section of Introspective, the elegant online magazine from 1stdibs. Plus I got to pick a few of my favorite items from 1stdibs’ current inventory, which, as always, is really dazzling–especially when it comes to my passion: French design from the 1920 through the 1940s.

Stockholm Syndrome: Laura Bohn’s Favorite New Products from the 2014 IKEA Catalog

The recently released 2014 IKEA Catalog is full of terrific new products. Here are some that caught my eye–I’ll be checking them out when I make my fall visit to the local store.

I love the all-cotton BJÖRNLOKA duvet cover and pillowcases with their bold black-and-white stripes.

The totally industrial look of the HEKTAR pendant lamp is amazing, absolutely perfect for hanging over a kitchen island.

I have to have the STOCKHOLM Swivel Easy Chair–not only does it rotate, it also comes in green and brown.

Knapper floor mirror back by IKEA

The KNAPPER Floor Mirror is the greatest–neatly tucked behind it are hooks and a rail for hangers, so you can have your work clothes out of sight but ready and waiting for you in the morning.

Söderhamn sofa by IKEA

The SÖDERHAMN Sofa is part of a marvelous sectional seating system that includes armchairs, chaises, ottomans, and corner units that can be endlessly reconfigured.

Grundtal laundry bin by IKEA

The GRUNDTAL Laundry Bin hangs from the wall on a stainless steel bracket. Who knew a laundry basket could be so chic and practical?

Stockholm fabric by IKEA

Designed by Maria Vinka, the all-cotton STOCKHOLM  fabric is big and graphic and would look great as a wall covering.

The STOCKHOLM Slatted Bed Frame and Base is made of stained ash and has leather headboard cushions. I love this combination of materials, which make it look like a much more expensive brand.

The LOCKSTA Easy Chair has a steel frame and a removable and washable fabric cover. It’s proportions are great–I can see it as a useful bedroom chair.

Krokig wall hook by IKEA

I love the fun and boldness of these KROKIG Wall Hooks–they’d be ideal for a kid’s room.

Kismet: Carl D’Aquino Pays Tribute to Vincente Minnelli & Tony Duquette at the International Antique Dealers Show

This fall my partner Francine Monaco, Dane Pressner, and I had a great time designing a booth for Bernd Goeckler Antiques at the International Fine Art & Antique Dealers Show, which ran October 25–31 at the Park Avenue Armory. The booth was something of an hommage to the movies of Vincente Minnelli and the designs of Tony Duquette, who worked on a couple of Minnelli movies as well as many other extraordinary projects. The design was based on a magical garden of Meissen porcelain flowers raining down into French ceramic planters with dramatically lighted swaths of shimmering fabric draped overhead to continue the fantasy. Here are some shots of the installation.

The booth featured a large chandelier by Max Ingrand (1908-1969) for Fontana Arte designed for the Italian Pavilion of the Brussels World’s Fair, 1958. It hung over a ca. 1956 “Ditirambo” ebonized mahogany, black-painted metal, and brass dining table by Ignazio Gardella (1905-1999) for Azucena.

The booth was draped in wide swaths of fabric by Gretchen Bellinger; this one, “Bloom With a View,” features a sea of die-cut organza blossoms on a sheer organza ground.

A screen of three verre-églomisé panels with a pastoral and harbor scene, 1943, by Paule and Max Ingrand hangs above a  large sideboard with bronze chevron motif, ca. 1964, by Jean Royère (1902-1981).
