On a Roll: The Meatball Shop

Meatballs are the hip cuisine du jour, and The Meatball Shop, a year-old restaurant on the Lower East Side, is the place where New York’s bright young things go to satisfy their cravings. I’ve know the chef and co-owner Daniel Holzman since he was about 13—his dad is a wonderful cabinetmaker, now retired, who worked with us at Stedila Design on many projects over the years. So when Daniel and his friend Michael Chernow decided to open a restaurant specializing in meatballs, we were pleased to advise on the design. Our help was purely conceptual (see the sketch below) and Michael practically built the place himself (I think I made only one site visit!).  Daniel has worked under such great chefs as Eric Ripert at Le Bernadin, so as good as the restaurant looks, the meatballs are even better.

The LES Meatball Shop has been such a wild success that Daniel and Michael are soon to open another one at 170 Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, and there are plans for a third shop on Greenwich Avenue in the West Village. We’re delighted to be the design consultants for both new locations.
