This is the study/guest bedroom in a Greenwich Village pied-à-terre. The clients wanted to be able to use the room not only as an office but also as a place for their grown-up children and other visitors to sleep in comfortably. We purchased a nifty pair of Cabrio In convertible twin beds from Resource Furniture. During the day, each provides 7 feet of desktop flanked by spacious cabinets and drawers. At night, without removing a single object from the desktop, the desk lifts up and sets back via a special piston-operated mechanism to reveal a twin bed. The room backs onto another building, so there isn’t a great view or a lot of natural light. We had the wonderful K. Flam Associates in the Bronx make curtains using Bergamo fabric 2127-2, and then lit the draperies from behind to create the illusion of natural light. The results are a space that’s both cheery and practical.
